Hose reels are frequently found in schools, colleges, restaurants, large office buildings and other public places. In fact the humble hose reel plays a vital part of most well thought out fire risk assessment. When hose reels are properly maintained they act as a powerful weapon for tackling fire. In the event of fire a faulty or defective hose reel could lead to the loss of human life and/or damage to property. Given hose reels are often stored in remote areas of your building, it’s easy to forget about their maintenance until it is too late.
Knowing your legal obligations
To combat potential neglect, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires hose reels be ‘subject to a suitable system of maintenance’ and be ‘maintained in an efficient state’. British Standard BS671 likewise states hose reels must be subject to ‘annual inspection’. BS671 even requires hose reels be pressure tested to a pressure equivalent to that stated on the tube’s marking. Pressure testing must be carried out every five years.
